The WI met in Hartfield in September and enjoyed a well attended monthly meeting. Our President welcomed everyone and our speaker from the Federation HQ, Shirley Kirby. The business was fairly short and included details of several workshops for different crafts and, dare it be said, some getting ready for Christmas.
Many members had had a very busy previous week and weekend helping organise stalls, the Hartfield Horticultural Society marquee, Community Tent, Teas and much more at what appeared to be, once again, a successful Village Fête. The weather was on the right side and although not boiling hot, came up with cool breezes and warm sun in equal parts and encouraged visitors to stay and enjoy an afternoon on the Croft.
Shirley Kirby gave an interesting talk and showed slides of beautiful craft items made by Sussex members since formation at the time of the First World War. Women, in those early days, certainly had talent and used their hands skilfully in glove making, quilting, knitting, dress making, embroidery of all sorts – especially table cloths – toy making and much more. Women, at that time, had to pull together and be very resourceful to get through difficult times. Many of these beautiful items are now kept safely in the archives in Lewes.
We meet on the second Monday of each month in the village hall at 8.00 p.m. and you would be very welcome should you be free. Contacts – Penny Carter 01892 771 166 or Val Ball 01892 662 873.
